May a tree 3000 years old, still be fruitful? Nature once again shows its grandeur.
The oldest olive tree in the world is located in Crete and is one of the seven olive trees in the Mediterranean region which their age exceeds the 3000 years. The Monumental Olive Tree of Vouves has been declared as “natural heritage monument” by decision no 603/17-2-1997of the Secretary General of the Region of Crete, due to its special ecological and historical importance.

The tree located in the village Vouves in Chania, Cretes, and in recent years right next, operates the Museum of Olive. The presence and others ancient olive trees at the region, reveals an ancient grove, but also the presence of an ancient civilization. The general findings of an ancient settlement in the area show a strong presence of humans since ancient times.

This impressive tree at its base is wild olive (which confirms the primordial nature) and then was domesticated by humans with the olive variety Tsounati.
Although the exact age of olive tree is difficult to estimate, believed that is between 3,000 and 5,000 years. This perennial, alive and fruitful even today, olive tree has been called worldwide monument of nature and every year hundreds of tourists from around the world visit this olive tree.
